Goff personifies the ignorance Charles Darwin was talking about when he said;

“Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.” -Darwin

Maybe I’m misinformed about the history so I’m happy to be corrected. But I thought analytic philosophers tried being handmaidens to science.

The problem was that science kept pointing to metaphysics. First, at abstract objects with math, then at modal facts with disposition like fragility. Philosophers started doing metaphysics again to make sense of this stuff.

Last point is about interpretation. Take quantum mechanics for example. I take it that we cannot settle the correct interpretation of quantum mechanics using the methods of science (correct me if I’m mistaken). If so, then don’t we need metaphysics to figure out what the science is telling us?
